Whale Sighting in Monterey, CA

From late April to early December, the Central California population of Humpback whales are known to migrate from their winter mating and calving waters off Mexico to their summer and fall feeding areas to the west of Central California. This puts them in reach of the Monterey Submarine Canyon, within which nutrient and wildlife-rich kelp forests sway with the tides and provide abundant feeding grounds for the marine mammals. Many marine research companies offer tours of Monterey Bay the public.

We took a trip to Monterey in June, our second time to watch whales and other marine life. It is always a special time to see them up close. Our tour was provided by Monterey Bay Whale Watch, a wonderful organization with friendly staff. Two of our tickets were won in a fundraiser auction (got a good deal for us in the process), and then we bought 3 more. The tour is such great value, with 4 hours of boat time and all the opportunities to see our friends in the ocean.

After the tour, we spent a bit of time at the wharf for lunch and shopping. We really need more than one day in Monterey!
